Introduction

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) represents a significant step forward in making dental care more accessible for eligible Canadians. At Valley Dental Port Alberni, we’re committed to helping our patients understand and navigate this new program, which takes effect November 1, 2024.

What Services Are Covered Under the CDCP?

Preventive Care

  • Regular check-ups and examinations
  • Dental cleanings
  • Fluoride treatments
  • Dental sealants for children and youth up to age 17

Basic Dental Services

Major Dental Work

  • Dentures
  • Crowns (with preauthorization)
  • Oral surgery services
  • Orthodontic services will only be covered for medical necessity based on strict criteria in 2025. A maximum spending limit will apply for orthodontic treatments

Key Points for Patients

Eligibility and Coverage Period

  • Coverage extends for 12 months (July 1 to June 30 annually)
  • Eligibility reassessment occurs before July 1 each year
  • Patients must be assessed by Service Canada to qualify

CDCP Implementation Schedule

The program is rolling out gradually based on age groups and eligibility:

  • Seniors aged 87 and older (began December 2023)
  • Seniors aged 77-86 (began January 2024)
  • Seniors aged 72-76 (began February 2024)
  • Seniors aged 70-71 (began March 2024)
  • Seniors aged 65-69 (starting May 2024)
  • Persons with a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate (starting June 2024)
  • Children under 18 years old (starting June 2024)
  • All remaining eligible Canadians (2025)

Important Coverage Details

  1. Direct Billing: Patients cannot submit claims for reimbursement; all claims must be submitted directly by dental providers
  2. Preauthorization Requirements:
    • Re-treatment of previously completed root canal treatment
    • Bonding for mobile teeth
    • Post-surgical evaluations
    • Crowns and cores
    • Posts for crown support
    • Complete immediate and overdentures
    • Partial dentures
  3. Claims Process: All claims must be submitted directly to Sun Life, the official service provider managing CDCP
    Direct Billing: Patients cannot submit claims for reimbursement; all claims must be submitted directly by dental providers to Sun Life
    Preauthorization Requirements: Some procedures require advance approval
    Frequency Limitations: Many services have specific time intervals between treatments

What’s Not Covered?

The CDCP does not cover:

  • Cosmetic treatments
  • Teeth whitening
  • Veneers
  • Dental implants
  • Night guards
  • Bridge work
